Entlebucher Mountain Dog

For years I have wanted to purchase an Entlebucher Mountain Dog. What kind of dog is this, you ask? He is a medium, short-haired Swiss dog that was recently accepted as an official AKC breed. He is a sweet tempered, loyal breed that I intend to use for hiking, showing, and as a great companion. Click here for more info.

The problem is that I am having difficulty naming this dog. For years I have called him "CHUCK". For reasons that need not be shared, I cannot name the dog Chuck. I am completely lost. Thus the "Name My Dog Blog". Please vote!

Here is the description and justification for each listed name:

Bridger - Named for the Bridger-Teton mountain range (otherwise known as the Windriver Range). This is my most favorite place in the world.

Luke - I am a HUGE Star Wars fan and Luke Skywalker is a stud. I also loved my parent's dog in Ghana - named Luke.

Reacher - Without question, I am the biggest Jack Reacher/Lee Child fan in the world. If you have not experienced these books, you have not lived. Start with the book called "The Persuader."

Rogue - Overall cool name. And a mountain in France.

Shan - This is the Chinese word for mountain. Our other dog's name is Mei-Mei (meaning little sister in Chinese). This would follow the trend.

Now that you know the names you can vote on the right. Good luck and thank you.

  2. I too LOVE Jack Reacher!!! Currently reading the latest. Why start with "Persuader"? I prefer to start at the beginning.

My sister has owned two Greater Swiss Mountain dogs. The first was named Shenandoah (Shena for short) after the mountains where they lived in Virginia. The second dog is named Oakie after the Oaker Mountains in Utah where they lived when they got her. So I guess my vote goes for the mountain range name even though I love Jack Reacher and I think Luke would be a great dog name.

  3. FYI: as Sam's wife, I thought I could share some insight on him and some of the names. This may help you vote if your struggling. We love names with meaning. All of our childrens names have some ancestral influence. Even our cat, adopted on the 4th if July is named Liberty. So... We do not take the naming of beloved items lightly.
Sam lives to strap on a backpack and explore the trails of mountains. There is no place he is happier. Our new puppy will hopefully be his dedicated companion on Sam's hiking adventures.
Sam also served his mission in Taiwan, becoming fluent in Mandarin Chinese. We love to dabble in Chinese words in this house. Also, my childhood friend/dog was named "Gow". Chinese for "dog". Quite a coincidence, wouldn't you say?
And as for Star Wars... Oh dear. Even my children quiz me on star wars knowledge. I'm not a fan, but around here it's very popular.
    I hope this helps.

  4. i think one of the most key deciding factors in dog naming, especially a dog you will take on adventures is what word do you want to yell out into the great outdoors that will not:
    1. sound un-manly ex:"oh, princess snugglebottom, come back here!"
    2. be easily confused with other calls for alarm ex:"KELP" or "VIRE" or "SHMAVALANCHE"
    3. be too long. i think it's important to have a short concise word.

for these reasons, I vote Luke. It's butch, doesn't rhyme with any natural disasters, and it's one strong syllable.

  5. I am torn between Reacher and Luke. I like both for different reasons. I love Luke because of our dog in Ghana, but that's also why I wouldn't want you to use it. One of those love hate things, it's like mom naming the cat Fred.... no good in my book, there is no other Fred in my book. I like Reacher because it is so original and just sounds like a dog name. I actually don't know those books, but it sounds like a great dog name.
p.s. I like your blog and I can't wait to meet your dog!

  7. Although good, Bridger is too cliche. You are too good for cliche.

Luke is too cool of a human name and no human wants to share a name with a dog; I don't care how great the dog is.

Reacher sounded good initially, although say it too many times and it sounds like Preacher; which would just be weird.

Rogue is a pretty good dog name if it doesn't bother you that it is also a girl name (X-Men)

Shan is the best one (only if it pronounced like Shan in Shannon). It sounds tough and dog-ish.

Really I think you should scrap them all and call him Senior Frank (senior is the Spanish pronunciation). We do have that Spanish-speaking family tie you know and Frank is just another cool name for hot dogs...

  8. I am Sams daughter Elisabth(11). So I have been hearing about CHUCK for a long long long time and when the lady that was going to sell the dog said she was ready my dad was so excited. We sit at the dinner tabel for a while just talking about it!!
In my opinion I like Luke, Rogue, and Bridger. I still think we should name him Bubbles, but aparently that is too girly. :(
I love you daddy and I hope the name picked fits the dog. Can't wait to love it!!

  9. I saw the picture of your dog and "Brewster" immediately popped into my head.... And I can't get it out. What are the chances that you have a Great uncle named Brewster or that there a mountain out there somewhere with the same name?? My second favorite would be Luke. We've got a few Star Wars fans in this house too and we all know how handy the force would be to have around.... !What a cute, cute pup. Have fun with him!! We miss you guys! Jenn Smith and crew xoxox

  10. I like the reasoning behind all the names you have chosen as possibilities but only one name has that special umph that a name needs and that’s Rouge. It feels like a literary character of great importance. It also has a feel of Scottish decent to it (in my opinion). I think that’s the name that would stand out and it wouldn’t be mispronounced like a couple of the other names. I can however suggest that if these names don’t work out I will let you borrow Rhett Butler till I get another dog of my own. I wish you and your dog (to be) the best of luck! Sincerely, ligament damage.

  11. Han Solo is WAY hotter and better than Luke - always was. Besides, Han(s) is German which is almost Swiss. HOWEVER, I'm not sure how manly it would sound yelling "Hans". . .or "Shan" for that matter. As far as the others - you got to think of what you are going to call him, especially when you are mad. . ."Hey Reach, get your $*@%* over here" or "Bridge, STOP pooping on the driveway". I'm thinking you better go with Lenny. (But really, I like Luke best. Just wanted to throw some dialogue out there.)
